I agree with you that Southwark is a very historic location with lots of placenames reflecting its riverside location, like Bankside; the Marshalsea Prison is NOT one of them. It is named after the King's official in charge of the prison - the Marshal just like a nearby prison the King's Bench. Also, Southwark Cathedral started life as a convent in the C7; by the C10 it was a college of Priests - hence it is still called a colleigate church. When are your next history walks?
