Last night...

...I was with local Catholic friends, watching the film John Paul II, starring Jon Voight.. J. telephoned to urge me not to travel home via Croydon, as there was a good deal of rioting there. Another member of the group heard from her son: he had arrived home safely but warned that the trams had stopped running and there were riots around Clapham Junction.

Pray for London.

Today is the feast of St. Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), a co-patroness of Europe. She spoke out boldly about current events during her years as a lay Catholic speaker in the early 1930s, and I will pray for her intercession regarding unrest in the UK. Americans have been stunned by live cable-TV coverage on BBC World of three nights of fires, looting and riots. We are deeply concerned for the British people, and for your beloved country, for whom we really do feel a "special relationship." The news from the UK and the major financial downturn on Wall Street affecting everyone have left most of us in shock. What would we do without our religious faith?

I saw the news on the BBC last night, but surely it's not unexpected? With the way society has changed since the 1950's I'm always surprised that we in the Western world have any civilization left. I pray for England every day.

Will keep London in prayer that Our Lady may bring peace to the city.

Dear Joanna, know you from your many times on EWTN, [once even when we where visiting the studio] and so googled Joann Bogle, to find out what insights & comment you have on these current events. I will come to your blog again for future updates. Thanks,
Peace of Jesus be with you.

Be safe with all that crazy rioting. There is never a justification for anything like that. I hope the police clamp down on it and soon. If the victum was in the right (which i don't know one way or the other), then the rioters have completely overturned justice. Many prayer for you all across the ocean.

I'm in Israel so I only know what I read on the internet.
We've protests here about rents and prices generally, but they're peaceful. It seems deeply worrying what's going on, both in the financial markets and on the streets.
